Gymnopilus spectabilis is a huge meaty mushroom that is hallucinogenic on the East Coast. Look-alike western collections that I have analyzed, known as Gymnopilus ventricosus,

shown here, do not contain psilocybin or psilocin. Both species are reportedly very bitter. In Japan the look-alike is known as the "Big Laughing Mushroom." Since psilocybin and psilocin are heat stable and water soluble, and since many species that contain these compounds can be unpalatable, it is not uncommon to make them into "Magic Tea", "Magic Soup", or "Magic Kool-aid" rather than eat the mushrooms directly.
