Lactarius pallescens, also known as Lactarius uvidus var. pallescens, like all Lactarius species with purple-staining latex, can cause gastric distress. Other species known to cause upset include Lactarius chrysorheus, Lactarius pubescens, Lactarius representaneus, and Lactarius torminosus. No acrid tasting Lactarius species should be consumed raw and all are risky even when cooked. One mild-tasting European species, Lactarius helvus, which has a strong scent of lovage or celery, has cause widespread gastrointestinal distress.
