Russula nigricans, is a typical member of the compactae group of Russula. These mushrooms have very crisp, firm flesh. Russula nigricans and similar species like Russula albonigra, Russula densifolia and Russula dissimulans that bruise red or black contains unidentified toxins that can cause severe poisonings. Sesquiterpines are the suspected problem.
