Lesson Eleven

I – 695 (The 30$ License Tabs Initiative)

Purpose:

To use the Internet as a source of information about a controversial bill recently passed in the state legislature. Find both sides of the issue.

Objectives:

1. To practice critical thinking, investigative research skills, and analytical writing.
2. To develop a sense of civics and the importance of our vote.

Length of Time Required:

This lesson will require approximately two hours.

Materials:

1. Computer with Internet Access
2. A writing instrument
3. Copies of the handout

Procedure:

Step 1 Prepare the students for the next two days. They will be going online and researching the I – 695 issue. Hold a brief discussion on the topic.

Step 2 Hand out a copy of the questions and instructions.

Step 3 Make on line computers available.

Conclusion:

There are always new laws being created and differences in opinion about these laws. It is important for the students to see how this initiative affects conditions of jurisdiction in Washington State.

Initiative – bill or law proposed by the citizens of state or local government.

Legislature – law and policy making body based on representation of local populations; area divided into legislative districts.
