A Quick Look at the Makah Whaling Issue
Part one: Researching the Makah Position
Go to the Virtual Atlas ‘Links to Other Resources on the Web’ page.
Click on American Indians, and look to the bottom of the second column. There you will find ‘Makah Indians’. Choose that by clicking and then select ‘Makah Whaling’. You will find a list of fifteen questions and answers posted to explain their side of the issue. Read each question and corresponding answer. Take notes and write three sentences to summarize what seems the most important to you.
Part two. Researching the Opponents Position.
Go to http://www.yahoo.com and search for ‘Makah whaling’; Make notes of what you find. Remember when searching out information on the web you need to skim read, make quick notes of where you found what and be persistent. Focus on the question; Are there reasons to ban whaling? You should find at least ten arguments to contradict the Makahs’ tribal position; Take notes. Refer to your notes and summary from part one to help in asking the right questions. You may wish to try other search engines such as www.lycos.com/, www.altavista.com or one of your own choosing.
Part Three. Formulating Your Own Ideas.
Where do you stand on this topic? Write a complete paragraph to state how you feel and what you think. Your paragraph should be at least six to eight sentences long.
