Expedition Washington 2000

Attention Geography Teachers:

• Want to take students into the field to see up close and in person what they are studying in the classroom?
• Would your students gain valuable insights into geography through participating, first hand, in the wonder of discovering new places with their unique cultures, ecology, and geography?
• Could they benefit from observing the trails and tribulations of a modern day journey of discovery?

 Make arrangements to log onto Expedition Washington 2000. Virtually join a group of students from The Evergreen State College as they spend the month of May trekking across the state. Weekly reports on the expedition's progress will be posted on the Virtual Atlas of the Pacific Northwest.

Reports will include:

• Photographs
• Journal entries
• Facts and commentary about the regions visited
• Links to related Internet resources

Geographic topics to be emphasized:

• Cultural differences
• Ecological characteristics
• Historical context that shaped the regions' development
• Expedition planning

To ensure this experience is both academic and enjoyable, you and your students will be able to interact with the expedition through e-mail. This will allow students to take a personal role in the learning process and you to customize the lessons to meet your teaching objectives. Similarly, the Evergreen students will be creating lesson plans for you to use in your classroom. These lessons will expand on the information presented throughout the expedition and ensure that the Washington State Essential Learning Requirements are being met.
