6:50PM

Well we survived the first day (at least so far) of our hike across the state of Washington. Made it about 10.5 miles. The team of 6 hikers and support crew shuttled to the eastern border of Washington at Tekoa.  This marks the beginning of the John Muir Trail and our trek across Washington. On the way up we visited our destination @ Cedar Falls which lies approximately 275 miles from my current location.

I sit in a place that I'm not familiar with. The desert like area that is populated with agriculture as far as I can see in front of me. A wasteland of garbage and barrels of probably what was toxic waste lies behind me. I followed the creek north from where our campsite is for the night. I ache from the day, plagued by sunburn and fatigue, but in good spirits. Brandy shares this notion as she is sprawled and sleeping behind me. Brandy is doing a great job!

7:15PM

We had some wildlife encounters throughout the day. We saw several hawks and another bird (?) [big long white tail] earlier in the day and morning. A couple of ferrets, two coyotes in the distance, apparently deer have been sighted although I did not. Tomorrow we hike through the town of Rosalia which is about five miles west. I want a cheeseburger.

This area is really nice thus far. The geology is interesting. We have encountered several basalt outcroppings. There hasn’t been much evidence from Missula floods (scablands) yet.

Well I have to set up camp and dinner so peace for now!
