After crossing the Columbia River yesterday, and having a plush night which consisted of Indian food and sandy beaches. Today was a wake up. The resupply dropped us off at the east end of the Yakima Firing Range where we slept comfortably last night. Today was a hot one. The sun was intense with only a couple of shady spots and no water. We made it to the potable water about half way across the military installation.
I'm curious what the night has in store for me and Brandy. I decided to erect my tent a top a ridge which has thus far been exciting. I'm not sure how smart it was. The wind currently blows about 20 mph, shaking the walls furiously. There is an impressive light show to the northeast. I hope the lightening storm keeps its distance.
The Yakima firing center military reservation has proven itself spectacular. This is truly the desert. A land that has gone virtually untouched with the exception of the occasional crater left behind from some past military operation. There has been absolutely no sign of others within the vast horizon. I dig this place.
We decided over dinner that tomorrow will be tactful. We will leave early in the morning, siesta during the peak sunshine hours, continue hiking in the late afternoon, dinner at the water hole, and then a night hike. We will have the following day to recuperate in Ellensburg.
I saw some cool stuff today! The railroad cuts revealed interesting geology. Saw some shale which was the first of the trip. Beautifully preserved column basalts with some pillows on bottom were also witnessed. A rattlesnake was observed by Pete and Cody. I believe I saw an owl. Brandy had a game of chase with a rabbit early in the day. Had an interesting epic with a hairy spider and her many kin. Well good night. Peace till tomorrow
