In southwest Oregon, a relatively small but significantly different area which requires recognition as a subregion. Sometimes referred to as the Klamath Knot to recognize the multiple ecosystems in the small area, the Klamath subregion has highly diversified biota. The Klamath Mountains extend from south of the Rogue River into California. The Cascade Mountains adjoin the Klamath Mountains, creating a rugged, geologically diverse area. The Oregon Caves National Monument recognizes this geological diversity. Biotic diversity is evident in forest ecosystems that include needle-leaf and broad-leaf forests. The U.S. Forest Service manages most of the lands in the subregion. Timber harvesting has long been the primary economic activity. There are few population centers. Grants Pass now primarily serves local residents and travelers on Interstate 5. Southern Oregon University and the yearly Shakespeare Festival have made Ashland a center for the arts and education. |
