Library Research Tips:

• TESC Library Catalog and SUMMIT, the state-wide academic library borrowing service. You can request the title yourself using your student ID number. It will be delivered to TESC circulation. Choose "keyword" search if you don't have an author or title in mind. When a list of titles comes up, click on one and look at it closely. Is it checked out? What subject headings is it listed under (see bottom of page). Use those to find other books on that topic. Write down the call number and go upstairs and look at the book! Browse the other books nearby.

• Choose Reference & Journals from the main library page for journal articles in history. Click the "General" or "Social Sciences" links and browse the databases that come up. Some will be full-text, most will be citation only. Choose the General button for JSTOR a great, full-text journal database. Many journals publish book reviews for their subject area. Keep in mind that not all journal articles are available electronically. Use the databases here to find a list of articles you want. Write them down using a full citation: author, title of article, title/name of the journal, volume, issue number, date and page numbers. Then do a journal title search to see if we have the journal in some form--electronic, paper, microfilm. Two electronic databases, "American History & Life" and "Historical Abstracts" are available on campus and off. Look them up alphabetically under the Reference & Journals link from the main library catalog page. These great resources but only provide abstracts of the journals articles. Once you've found articles you want, you'll need to look up the name of the journal to see if we carry a subscription.  Remember that off campus you'll need to supply your name a student ID number to gain access to our journals and databases.

• Government Documents online resources and physical collection at TESC. The Washington State Library in Tumwater is a full government repository.

• History Reference Resources in the Library: See index area on the main floor of the library in the Reference area for the Book Review Index and Social Science Citation index . These series are arranged by year. Select the appropriate year and search under author's last name. In the SSCI, use the citation portion of the index. See also the Encyclopedia of American Social History in the reference stacks, HN57.E58 1993; 
• Style Guides: Most historians use Chicago Manual of Style as their format for writing research papers. Check these online guides for hints on how to cite materials. Copies of these style guides are available for in-library use from the reference desk.
