Description
This intensive academic and cultural experience will take place
in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A highlight of the program will be teaching English
and observing classes in bilingual schools (English/Spanish). These internships
will be sponsored by the English Speaking
Scholastic Association of the River Plate (ESSARP). The program will also
include daily Spanish language lessons and a weekly seminar on teaching language
and/or cultural topics. Students can enroll for first session only (8 credits)
or for both sessions (16 credits).
The program will be profitable for teachers of bilingual students
in the US and for students with a strong interest in language development and
education in general. The range of student backgrounds and preparation is expected
to be wide. The program will provide a common ground through readings, seminars
and assignments focused on language teaching and learning. Student activities
at the bilingual schools will include:
-
Acting as teachers assisstants, helping with conversation
activities, group assignments, and one-to-one practice in the classroom.
Occasionally, and depending on students background and preparation,
they can design and deliver lessons if the teacher sees fit.
-
Observations of class structure, content and dynamics. Students
will design guidelines to conduct their observations and will reflect on
different aspects of teaching and learning a second/foreign language based
on such observations.

Buenos Aires is a huge and beautiful city that offers wonderful
cultural attractions. Forty percent of the Argentine population resides in Buenos
Aires and surrounding areas. Known as the "Paris of the Americas",

theatre and dance shows of unsurpassed quality in Latin America. Tango, of course,
is the soul of Buenos Aires and is performed in supper clubs and in the streets.
There
are many other places to visit in Argentina, such as Patagonia, Iguazú
Falls and the Andean region. Air and ground transportation leaves from Buenos
Aires to these and other destinations daily. For more information on possible
