Geographic Information Systems: Theory and Practice
|
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer programs that combine components of computer assisted design (CAD), relational database, and statistical analysis software to allow the display, storage, analysis, and editing of geographically-referenced information. The power of GIS has made it an important tool in the fields of resource management, planning and development, and scientific research.
In this exciting and fast paced class we will cover a wide range of GIS topics including coordinate systems, data input, editing, display, database queries and spatial data models. Concepts and fundamental GIS techniques will be explained in lectures and students will gain hands-on experience with ArcGIS 9.2.

Dam Nation: the science and policy of dams and dam removal
|
Dams are traditionally considered permanent landscape fixtures, but in the United States the number of dams removed each year has exceeded new dam construction.
In this course, we will explore the science and policy behind dams and dam removal. The first half of the quarter will focus on dam construction; why we built them where we did, and their known and perceived costs and benefits. In the second half of the quarter, we will focus on the emerging trend of dam removal; why are we removing dams in the United States, are we removing the right ones, and what are the known and perceived costs and benefits associated with dam removal?
Students should gain a basic understanding of the science, geography, and policy issues surrounding dams and dam removal in the Pacific Northwest. Critical discussion and scientific writing skills will be employed and will serve as the basis for student evaluation.
