Jan. 5/Week 1 : Defining Research and Meeting Your Potential Research Partners.

Jan12/Week 2 : Determining a Research Topic.
For this class read : Read: Part I Chapters 1 & 2 in The Craft of Research (Including the Preface), Part II Chapters 3 & 4 in The Craft of Research and the Introduction and Chapters 1 and 2 of Sack's Tearing Down The Gates.
Class Activity :
(NOTE: Your projects can be done either individually or in group work. Projects may be on two separate or a single topic).
Writing Assignment for next week : Answer (to the best of your ability) the three questions posed in the section on how to develop a working research problem (page 48 in Craft of Research) . (There is no page limit on this assignment. It is to your advantage to think these questions through thoroughly and write extensively so that you have an understanding of what you are interested in and how you perceive your interest can be made to be interesting to others).
Jan 19/Week 3 : What does it look like to use research in practice? Where are the Research Resources?
For this class read :: Part II Chapters 5 and 6 in The Craft of Research and Part Two and Part Three in Tearing Down the Gates .
Class Activity :
Writing assignment for next week: Write a series of “I used to think/now I think” statements that connect with your reading of Sacks. Create at least five points of comparison. These will become the basis for your researched essay.
Jan 26/Week 4 : Developing a research question of your own that builds on someone else’s work (Lardner)
For this class read : Finish Tearing Down the Gates and read chapters 7 & 8 in Part III of Craft of Research

· For week 6, write a draft of your Sacks essay. Bring 3 copies to class.
· For next week: 2-3 page paper on your understanding of the relationship between research elements as presented in Craft of Research.
