The Evergreen State College has established a Cooperative Agreement with the Mt. Rainier National Park which will provide paid interships for at least two students. The internships will last 12-14 weeks during the summer. This summer the internship positions include:
Fish Crew
Assists in the collection and reporting of all data for fish including associated
ecological and habitat information.. Collects field data relating to inventories
and monitoring of aquatic ecosystems with emphasis on fish. Implements fish
surveys according to established protocols. Performs computerized data entry,
quality control of data collection and entry and provides preliminary assessment
and classification of the information. Responsible for maintaining and operating
field and lab equipment, and evaluates quality assurance/control procedures.
Amphibian Crew
Assists in the collection and reporting of all data for amphibians including
associated ecological and habitat information. Collects field data relating
to inventories and monitoring of aquatic ecosystems with emphasis on amphibians.
Implements amphibian surveys according to established protocols. Performs computerized
data entry, quality control of data collection and entry and provides preliminary
assessment and classification of the information. Responsible for maintaining
and operating field and lab equipment, and evaluates quality assurance/control
procedures.
Carrying Capacity Inventory, Natural Resource Web Development, data compilation
and GIS support
Assists in the collection and reporting of data associated with park carrying
capacity studies, including monitoring visitor use and associated impacts. Performs
computerized data entry, quality control of data collection and entry and provides
preliminary assessment and classification of the information. Assists in the
preparation of technical reports. Compiles, reduces, stores, retrieves, analyzes
and reports technical data collected in field surveys.
Assists scientific staff in preparing written summaries of natural resource information that will be placed on the park Website under Natural Resource information. Available information is synthesized and summarized and written profiles are prepared on topics such as park air quality, aquatic resources, plant and wildlife.
Provides GIS support to park GIS specialist in developing maps and data compilations for various park natural resource projects.
For all field crew Jobs
Valid State Drivers License required. First Aid card recommended. Work involves
frequent hiking (up to 15 miles per day), carrying a heavy pack (up to 60 pounds)
on uneven, steep terrain at elevations that range from 2000 ft. to 9000 ft.
Work will continue in all types of weather on land and on water. (For fish and
amphibian crews: Some work involves snorkeling or entering very cold waters
using protective equipment (dry suits, waders)). Other work will involve a variety
of sedentary tasks in an office setting. Work may also require sitting in front
of video terminals/computers for prolonged periods of time.
Field work involves moderate risks, discomforts or unpleasantness, especially
when traveling to and working in "remote" locations. Other work will
be performed in an office setting which is normally adequately lighted, heated,
and ventilated. Office work may also require sitting in front of video terminals/computers
for prolonged periods of time. Employee is required to operate various motor
vehicles and hand propelled watercraft. Field work often requires backcountry
overnight stays for several days in a row.
