Welcome to the M.V. Explorer!

This site is for the posting of my weekly gazettes, brought to you live from the M.V. Explorer, part of the Semester at Sea, a shipboard university administered through the University of Pittsburgh. The Semester at Sea does multiple voyages every year (3-1/2 months around the world one way in fall, 3-1/2 months around the world the other way in the spring, and two-month voyages in the summer alternating between North Pacific and North Atlantic). I was lucky enough to be hired for the North Atlantic voyage this summer along with a couple dozen other faculty and staff, and about 400 students. From June 10 through August 21, we went from Grand Bahama Island to Halifax (Nova Scotia), Reykjavík (Iceland), Bergen (Norway), St. Petersburg (Russia), Gdansk (Poland), Antwerp (Belgium), Le Havre (France), Dublin (Ireland), Bilbao (Spain), and returning by way of Ft. Lauderdale. The basic rhythm of our voyage was several days at sea (with classes), and several days in port (adventures). This gazette is for family, friends, students, and my ethnomusicology colleagues who might want to either compare this visit with their own, or see what they can expect if they plan to do this voyage sometime. To the left you can see the various ports of call, with postings to each site as they come up (generally separated by a week).
